Another photo from my Iceland trip last year. This was taken right next to the Foss Hotel in Skaftafell (I believe the white area of the picture is the Skaftafell Glacier), on our last night in Iceland. We had hoped to get photos of the Northern Lights over the Jokulsarlon Lagoon, but it got too cloudy so we returned to the hotel just after sunset.
Just like the night before (near Skogar), almost as soon as we returned to the hotel and stepped out of the car the Northern Lights had started. We all rushed up a nearby hill to try and get away from the hotel lights so we could take photos as the clouds were coming in quite quickly (which are slightly visible in this photo). We were probably taking photos and watching the lights for about an hour, until they got weaker and the clouds came in completely.
This photo was actually taken as part of a time-lapse sequence (which ended up making just a few seconds of video), but was one of the better shots out of the few hundred that were taken. Near the center you can see some of the other photographers, and at the top the Big Dipper is visible.
